DETROIT WORKS · PUBLIC SAFETY

INDUSTRY, CRIME & POLICING.

An industrial city concentrated people, vehicles, freight, equipment, cash, and valuable goods. Those concentrations matter when studying historical policing and criminal opportunity, but the context must be handled carefully rather than converted into simplistic claims that factories "caused" crime.

FACTORY DISTRICTS

Where industrial life met police work.

Industrial districts created their own policing environment.

Large plants concentrated workers, vehicles, freight, commercial property and shift traffic in predictable places and at predictable times. Police work around those districts could therefore involve traffic, theft, public order, accidents and the ordinary disputes of a crowded working city.

  • Factory gates created sudden concentrations of people and vehicles
  • Freight and commercial property produced distinct security concerns
  • Shift changes altered street activity by hour
  • Labor disputes and public-order questions required their own historical context

CONTEXT IS NOT CAUSATION

The presence of industry does not explain a crime by itself. This site uses industrial geography to understand the setting around a documented incident, while keeping the evidence for that incident separate.
