LAW & THE WATER

Border Policing

Customs, local police and federal enforcement all met along the same river.

JURISDICTION

The same water, different authorities.

Local police, customs officers and federal agencies did not perform the same job on the river. Jurisdiction depended on the conduct involved, the location and the law being enforced, which means “border policing” can hide important distinctions.

This room keeps those authorities separate. When a historical incident crosses jurisdictions, the site follows the records created by each agency instead of blending them into one simplified enforcement story.
