THE NIGHT WATCH

Police after dark.

Night changed police work without changing its basic dependence on communication and geography. Officers moved between precincts, street assignments, call boxes, cruisers, taverns, residences and commercial districts while reports and arrests eventually returned to a station or bureau.

Patrol and Vice could encounter the same street for very different reasons. This section keeps those functions distinct while showing how the nighttime city connected them.
