Ralph left the Army Air Forces at Baer Field near Fort Wayne, Indiana, on November 6, 1945. Palmer family history remembers the trip back to Detroit by train—a quiet transition from military life to a city that was changing just as quickly as he was.
Detroit was converting from wartime production, veterans were returning in huge numbers, and civilian routines had to be rebuilt. Ralph returned to industrial work, but the next change came quickly.
On March 4, 1946, he was appointed to the Detroit Police Department.

The train ride is preserved as Palmer family history. On the site it serves as a transition, not as a reconstructed scene.

The wartime chapter closes in November 1945. Four months later, Ralph's Detroit story enters the street-level world of precincts, call boxes and patrol.
