Ralph Renna Palmer was born in Detroit on November 11, 1919, into a strict Catholic household. Faith shaped family life, but his father, Bernardo Renna—who used George Palmer as his American name—made a deliberate choice about education: Ralph would attend Detroit public schools and be raised first and foremost as an American.
That choice placed a Catholic family inside the everyday civic life of the city—neighborhood streets, public classrooms and the industrial Detroit that would soon shape Ralph's working life.
