The public side of the night.

Detroit after dark was also ordinary life: taverns, restaurants, hotel bars, music rooms and neighborhood gathering places serving workers finishing a shift or residents meeting friends. These legal public spaces shared commercial streets with places that drew vice complaints or police attention.

Keeping the ordinary night visible matters because a crime scene was rarely a world apart. It sat inside a functioning city of customers, employees, traffic, entertainment and routine.
